The MUSIKA ASYA is a performing group consisting of UP College of Music students majoring in Asian Music and Musicology. The ensemble specializes in the performance of Philippine instrumental music in traditional and modern styles. Organized in 1991 by Dr. Felicidad A. Prudente, Chairperson of the Department of Music Research, MUSIKA ASYA aims to promote Philippine music through concert performances, lecture-demonstrations and workshops. They perform a varied repertoire for Philippine gongs comprising its basic instrumentation complemented by drums, wooden xylophones, hanging logs and bamboo instruments.
Through the years, MUSIKA ASYA has performed for both local and foreign audiences with concerts at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Philippine International Convention Center, World Trade Center and other popular venues. Numerous lecture-demonstrations for local and foreign guests as well as workshops for students in the elementary and high-school levels are part of the group’s regular activities. Their "Gong Pinoy" concerts which showcase Philippine ethnic sounds and popular music have been well-received even outside Metro Manila.
