JOEY AYALA

While earning his degree of Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the Ateneo de Davao University, Joey AYALA kept a continuing romance with his guitar, an instrument he learned to play from various means. Writing was also a major part of his academic life. Yet all through his schooldays, Joey did not go quite directly into a musical or writing career, but instead he ventured into advertising, editing, financial consultancy, broadcasting and theater.

All this turned to be a sure-footed advancing towards the larger target: the creation and performance of a new king of music. When one hears the name Joey AYALA, one immediately picks up terms like neo-ethnic, alternative genre, indigenous instruments, etc. The These only brand Ayala and his altered native band Bagong Lumad as exotic, unique and very artistic in their musical instruments, imitation of animal and insect sounds, eclectic influences from the Visayan and Southern region with the blend of Asian and non-Asian style, plus the voice that soars to the depths of our souls, simple from Ayala and his whole repertoire.

Joey Ayala is a poet, story-teller and stand-up comic, a guitarist-performer, a multi-instrumentalist, a composer, a lyricist and arranger, all sums up that he is a total performer whose forte is live performance its best.

His first two albums "Panganay Ng Umaga" (1982) ang"Magkabilaan" (1986) became underground classics while his 1992 release, "Mga Awit ng Tanod Lupa" helped shatter the borders between entertainment and education. His latest album released by Star Records, "Lupa’t Langit"  shows an evolution from ethnic to neo-ethnic rock n’ roll with a danceable beat. It carried various themes on man, environment, the esoteric society and its ills, all the songs are written by Joey with special collaborations with our country’s creative musical artists.

Multi-faceted Ayala also ventured into musical scoring, having Celso Ad Castillo’s recent film "Virgin People" as his initial project.
