ULLALIM FESTIVAL OF KALINGA TO COMMENCE ON FEB. 14

On February 14, 1998, the Kalinga Council for Culture and the Arts, in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the local government of Kalinga will be celebrating the ULLALIM FESTIVAL.  This is a one day cultural festival that will showcase the unique way of life of the Kalingas.

As one of the major ethnolinguistic groups in Northern Luzon, the Kalingas are known for their boldness and courage.  The name Kalinga itself is a term which means "fighter", "enemy", or "head-hunter" in the Ibanag or Gaddang languages.  Aside from this, they are also known as the peacocks of the North, having the ability to combine feathers, beads, shells, tattoos, and fabrics in a rich textured display of physical beauty.

In literature and music, the Kalingas takes great pride in their ullalim or ballads which are either sung or chanted by village bards during wedding celebrations, bodong, or any special occasion.  Most of the ullalim are epics, narrating the great exploits of heroes.

The ULLALIM FESTIVAL, which has become an annual event for the Kalingas, was first held in June 1995 as a highlight for the visit of President Fidel V. Ramos who was conferred the title Pangat,  which is a Kalinga Royal Title. Now, with the revival of the festivities, the story of the rich cultural heritage of the Kalingas will again be told.

Highlights of the festival  include cultural presentations, traditional crafts and cuisine, music and rituals, sportsfest, exhibits, conferences and workshops which will be  participated by the eight municipalities of Kalinga namely: Balbalan, Lubuagan, Pasil, Pinukpuk, Rizal, Tabuk, Tanudan, and Tanglayan.

NCCA’S PISTANG SINING
FEATURES ANIMATED  FILM "ADARNA" AT QC CIRCLE

Last year, PISTANG SINING stirred up excitement among its student audiences with Dulaang Sibol, a drama group from Ateneo de Manila High School romping the stage in a series of one-act plays.

This 1998, PISTANG SINING is coming up strong with another treat for young audiences. On February 20, 1998 at 7:00 p.m., there will be an open-air presentation of the highly-acclaimed animated film, "ADARNA, the Mythical Bird" at the Quezon City Memorial Circle.

"ADARNA, the Mythical Bird" adjudged as the first full-length Filipino animated film is the brain child of animator/film maker Geirry Garccia. Garccia is one of the foremost animators in the country having no less than twenty full years of experience in the field. He has various achievements to his credit which includes the animated TV series, ANG PANDAY in 1986 as well as CAPTAIN BARBEL and DARNA.  Abroad, he has been tapped to do commercials for Nickelodeon, and illustrations for MacMillan Children’s books which includes projects like Little Snow Girl, Ernie and Bubba Comics, Little Mouse, and Toyster Animation series to name a few.

A timeless tale with a new twist, ADARNA  takes the viewer to newfound land with interesting characters like the evil creature Lagim, the sorceress Elmira, the talkative bird, Martina, the scheming palace courtier Bubo and jealous prince Gustavo.

Although the film took years to finish,  for Geirry every effort was worth it.  The film boasts of clear and impressive animation coupled with the best artists behind the production line.  Regine Velasquez and Martin Nievera did the film’s love song while pop group "The Youth" did the song presentation for Lagim.   Filipino music legend Levi Celerio rendered his unique "leaf music" in the soundtrack of the film.

Students and film enthusiasts are invited to attend the free screening of ADARNA. This  PISTANG SINING presentation joins the celebration of February Arts Month. For more information, please contact the PISTANG SINING project director, Peanuts Pañares or Lani Candolada of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) at 527-2192 / 95 local 28.

PISTANG SINING is an annual project of the Committee on Cultural Education under the Subcommission on Cultural Dissemination of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

NCCA Launches New Books on Traditional Music and Poetry

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) has been supporting publications on traditional  songs, dances, and literature as part of its thrust to preserve, promote and develop Philippine culture and arts.  Through its Committee on Balud Cultural Communities under the Subcommission on Cultural Communities and Traditional Arts, two books, "Ang Mga Tradisyonal Na Musikang Pantinig Sa Lumang Bauan, Batangas" by Elena Rivera Mirano  and  "Sa Gulugod Ng Kalabaw" (Mga Tula ng Bulakan 1928-1994) edited by Eduardo M. Lapiz have been granted publication assistance by the Commission.

"Ang Mga Tradisyonal na Musikang Pantinig Sa Lumang Bauan, Batangas" by Elena Rivera Mirano is based on her doctoral dissertation which seeks to document folk musical traditions in the province of Batangas.  It studies five major repertoires of traditional song (huluna, awit, pabasa, subli and  kanta) and employs methodologies that cross and integrate various disciplines—literary history and criticism, ethnomusicology, local and oral history, and anthropology.

"Sa Gulugod ng Kalabaw" (Mga Tula ng Bulakan 1928-1994) is an anthology of poems written by five premiere poets of Bulacan: Conrado Victoria, Francisco Ciriaco Lopez, Virginia Acuña Cruz, Aurelio De Guzman and Pablo Manuel. The collection includes 141 unpublished poems recovered from aging manuscripts written over the decades.

Both books are important documentation of folk traditions in the provinces of Batangas and Bulacan, furthering the preservation and development of local  art forms which are threatened to extinction by the passage of time.

There will be a formal launching of the books on February 26, 1998, 6:00 p.m. at the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), 633 General Luna Street, Intramuros, Manila. Highlights of the book launch will include performances on Subli and poetry reading. For more details, please contact Renato Manaligod at 527-2192/95 local 30.
